Infinity Ward is reshaping Modern Warfare 4 multiplayer with Collateral, a new single-life mode that shifts the focus from custom loadouts to tactical economy. This change targets players who prefer the high-stakes, round-based tension found in games like Counter-Strike and Valorant. Gamers seeking a more structured competitive environment will find this mode directly addresses that demand by removing the usual pre-match customization.
Infinity Ward removes custom loadouts and respawns in new bomb defusal mode
Collateral pits two teams against each other in a bomb-defusal format centered on two specific sites. Teams alternate between attacking and defending roles each round, but players do not start with their preferred gear. Instead, everyone begins with pistols and must earn cash to purchase weapons, armor, and perks between rounds. This economy-driven loop forces strategic resource management rather than relying on fixed loadout advantages.
The mode disables several standard Call of Duty features to maintain its distinct identity. Respawns, killstreaks, automatic health regeneration, and custom loadouts are all turned off. Infinity Ward confirmed the return of the Shipment map to support this intense, close-quarters gameplay. The developers designed Collateral specifically for fans of Search and Destroy and the broader competitive community.
Infinity Ward also addressed ongoing community concerns regarding matchmaking. The studio stated it will not address Skill-Based Matchmaking (SBMM) despite recent backlash. Details on the Team Buy option for UAVs remain unclear, as the exact mechanics for how squads pool cash are not yet revealed. When we covered the last Modern Warfare 4 update, several of the same balance and stability themes came up.
The studio confirmed the Shipment map's return and the new Collateral mode's launch parameters. Players can expect a single-life, economy-based experience on a known map. Infinity Ward has declined to modify SBMM settings regardless of player feedback.
