Minisforum has introduced a more affordable version of its N5 Air network-attached storage device, targeting users who need high capacity without the premium price tag of the top-tier model. This new N5 Air-7640 variant swaps the previous Ryzen 7 processor for a Ryzen 5 chip, lowering the entry cost for enthusiasts building a personal media or game library. The move gives buyers a way to access the same massive storage expansion options at a significantly reduced price point.
Budget NAS variant swaps Ryzen 7 for Ryzen 5 to lower entry cost
The device retains the familiar N5 Air chassis but changes the internal computing core to an AMD Ryzen 5 7640HS processor. This Zen 4-based CPU replaces the Ryzen 7 255 found in the more expensive configuration, offering a different performance profile for the system. The enclosure measures 199 x 202 x 252 mm and weighs 4 kg, providing a compact footprint for a unit designed to hold multiple drives.
Specifications
- CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 7640HS
- Max Storage: 174 TB (5x SATA + 3x NVMe)
- Max Memory: 96 GB DDR5-5600
- Networking: 10 Gbps and 5 Gbps ports
- Dimensions: 199 x 202 x 252 mm
Storage remains the primary feature of this hardware, with the system supporting up to 174 TB of total capacity. Five SATA bays can accommodate 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch drives, allowing for up to 150 TB of storage using current 30 TB drives. Three M.2 slots add support for another 24 TB of NVMe storage, bringing the advertised maximum to the stated 174 TB limit. The system also includes two SO-DIMM slots that support up to 96 GB of DDR5-5600 memory.
Connectivity options include separate 10 Gbps and 5 Gbps network ports to handle high-speed data transfers. Expansion capabilities feature an OCuLink port and an internal PCIe Gen4 x16 slot for adding external GPUs or other peripherals. Minisforum lists the N5 Air-7640 at $495 for a configuration with 64 GB of OS storage and no system memory, while a version with 16 GB of DDR5 RAM costs $679. Both configurations are expected to ship in late October.
