AMD announced that its FSR 4 upscaling technology will support older GPU architectures. The feature was previously exclusive to RDNA 4 GPUs. The company is now extending compatibility to RDNA 3 and RDNA 2 architectures.
FSR 4.1 arrives for RDNA 3 in July
FSR 4 delivers better image quality than FSR 3, according to AMD's Jack Huynh. The RDNA 3 compatible version, called FSR 4.1, will be available in July. The RDNA 2 compatible version is expected early next year.
The Steam Deck uses RDNA 2 architecture. This means FSR 4 may become officially available on the Steam Deck early next year. AMD has not confirmed Steam Deck support directly, but the timeline aligns with the RDNA 2 rollout.
Jack Huynh said his team has been working to bring FSR 4 to more cards. He noted that AMD powers over 1 billion gaming devices worldwide. The company is expanding FSR 4 support to reach a broader audience.
AMD has not confirmed whether FSR 4 will officially support the Steam Deck. The announcement specifically mentioned 6000 and 7000 series GPUs. The company showed handheld PCs in a video, but did not name the Steam Deck directly.
