Square Enix is changing how players access Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on physical media. Buyers who buy a disc or cartridge must still download extra data to play the game. This shift means physical copies no longer provide a complete, offline experience on day one.
Square Enix confirms single disc release needs additional data
The title launches on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC on April 8, 2027. Unlike the previous two games in the remake trilogy, which used two discs, this release uses a single disc or cartridge. The developer confirmed that an internet connection is required to download additional game data in order to play the physical version of the game.
Storage requirements vary by platform. The Nintendo Switch 2 version will require 130 GB of storage space for the download. PS5 discs can hold a maximum of 100 GB, which limits the amount of data that can be stored on the physical media itself. Xbox Series X/S versions also require an internet connection to download additional data.
It is not known yet whether the disc will contain at least some of the game and the connection is required to download the rest, or whether the disc will contain little more than an unlock and the entire game will have to be downloaded. This distribution method affects how players manage their console storage and internet usage before they can start playing.
We looked at the last Final Fantasy VII Rebirth update earlier while tracking the game's development cycle. The physical release model marks a departure from the multi-disc approach used in earlier entries. The game is scheduled for release on April 8, 2027.
