China's CXMT has entered risk production for HBM3E memory chips, marking a rare manufacturing milestone for a Chinese semiconductor foundry. This development matters because it introduces a new potential supplier into the high-bandwidth memory market, which is critical for AI accelerators and high-end graphics processing. While the technology is not yet ready for mass consumer devices, it signals a shift in global supply chain dynamics for advanced memory components.

New Chinese foundry targets AI accelerators with 1.2 TB/s bandwidth

The HBM3E product utilizes a 1,024-bit interface to achieve a total bandwidth of 1.2 TB/s. CXMT is pushing pin speeds between 9.2 and 12.4 Gbps to meet these performance targets. The company offers capacity options of 24 GB using 8-high stacks or 36 GB via 12-high stacks. These specifications align with standard HBM3E requirements for next-generation computing hardware.

HBM3E Specifications

  • Interface Width: 1,024-bit
  • Total Bandwidth: 1.2 TB/s
  • Pin Speed: 9.2 to 12.4 Gbps
  • Capacity Options: 24 GB or 36 GB

CXMT currently operates two 12-inch fabs in Hefei and Beijing, producing approximately 200,000 wafers per month. The foundry is targeting an increase to 350,000 wafers per month by the end of the year. This aggressive expansion pace, which involves constructing new facilities in 12 months compared to the industry standard, suggests a potential for rapid scaling. However, current yields remain negligible as the company navigates the risk production phase.

HBM production is resource-heavy and could impact the broader memory market. The Information reports that this demand might cause prices for standard consumer DDR5 DRAM to plateau or rise for the rest of the year. This potential side effect highlights the competitive pressure between advanced AI memory and standard PC memory supply chains. Buyers of standard memory components should monitor these trends as production scales.

CXMT's entry into HBM3E manufacturing places Chinese foundries approximately two generations behind South Korean rivals who are already targeting HBM4E. Despite this gap, the move establishes a domestic source for critical high-bandwidth memory technology. The company's ability to scale from risk production to high-volume manufacturing will determine the actual impact on global supply chains.
