Creative Assembly has shared new details about the design philosophy for the upcoming Total War Medieval 3. The studio is moving away from traditional skill trees in favor of emergent character growth.

Characters develop through traits and ancillaries

According to Creative Assembly, characters will develop through traits and ancillaries rather than predetermined skill paths. Progression will carry across dynasties instead of being tied to individual characters. The team cited mods such as Europa Barbarorum 2, Stainless Steel, and Medieval Kingdoms 1212 AD as inspirations.

The game will feature dynasty-based progression inspired by popular mods.

The developer aims to balance accessibility with nuanced historical authenticity. Creative Assembly designer Leif Walter said the studio currently has no plans for skill trees in Medieval 3. Walter also noted that Total War games must tread the middle ground between accessible history and nuanced realness.

Creative Assembly has not confirmed a release date or pricing for Medieval 3. The game remains in development with further details expected in the future.
