VALVE STEAM

is actively developing the next generation of its handheld gaming PC, known as the 2. The company confirmed that the device is in development but stated it is too early to announce a specific release date. Valve aims to deliver a significant performance leap rather than incremental improvements over the current hardware.

Pierre-Loup Griffais, a Valve programmer, explained that the team is not satisfied with achieving only 20 to 50 percent more performance at the same battery life. The goal is to create a more demarcated jump in capability. Current silicon technology is not yet strong enough to deliver the kind of major performance jump the company wants for a true next-generation device.

Valve is moving forward with its broader hardware ecosystem step by step. The Controller is scheduled to launch globally on May 4. This device will be the first of Valve's new hardware products to reach the market. The launch of the new Steam Machine was originally expected earlier but was disrupted by a global RAM memory crisis.

Griffais noted that much of the work on the Steam Deck 2 relies on learnings from current hardware projects and recent silicon advancements. He stated that the team has a pretty good idea of what the next version of the Steam Deck will be. The company wants to ensure everything is ready before announcing launch dates for the main handheld unit.

Valve has not confirmed a release window for the Steam Deck 2. The company continues to prioritize stability and readiness over speed in its hardware rollout.
