Atari Acquires PS1 Emulation Studio Implicit Conversions

Atari has acquired Implicit Conversions, a studio specializing in PlayStation 1 emulation. The announcement was made on April 24, 2026.

Acquisition fills emulation gap

Implicit Conversions developed the Syrup Engine, which supports seven classic systems, with PlayStation 2 support coming soon. The studio is also working on a PS2 emulator called Waffle and a PS3 emulator named Benedict.

The acquisition fills a gap between Atari's existing studios: Digital Eclipse, which focuses on 8-bit and 16-bit games, and Nightdive Studios, which handles polygonal titles. Atari CEO Wade Rosen stated that the deal rounds out the company's proprietary tools.

Implicit Conversions had previously collaborated with Atari subsidiary Digital Eclipse on PlayStation 1 ports. The studio confirmed the acquisition on social media, saying its mission to bring retro games to modern consoles remains unchanged.
