SEGA confirmed that Sonic Frontiers has crossed a major commercial threshold, moving more than five million copies worldwide. Reaching five million units sold positions Sonic Frontiers as a significant commercial success for the series. The announcement arrived on June 23, 2025, via the official Sonic Twitter account. Players who bought the title can now claim a free digital reward to celebrate the achievement.
SEGA releases free Adventure 2 shoes to mark the milestone
The original release of Sonic Frontiers launched on November 8, 2022. SEGA made the game available across a wide range of platforms including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. Sonic Frontiers features an open-zone design that diverges from the series' traditional linear gameplay. The shift to open-zone gameplay has likely contributed to attracting a wider player base.
SEGA originally projected that sales would reach 4.57 million units by June 2025. The company has now surpassed that initial forecast with the new five million unit total. To mark the occasion, SEGA released a digital item for all players. The reward consists of Sonic's iconic shoes from the 2001 game Sonic Adventure 2. This free item is available to anyone who owns the game regardless of platform.
SEGA is preparing a Switch 2 version of the title for release on June 23, 2026. This future launch is listed as Sonic Frontiers Definitive Edition.
