The Electronic Materials Office is launching the Altar II, a mechanical keyboard that claims to be the thinnest of its kind at just 4.75mm. The 4.75mm thickness reduces the bulk typically associated with mechanical switches, allowing the keyboard to fit more easily on compact desks or in travel bags. The Altar II offers a compact mechanical typing experience with a 75% layout and USB-C connectivity.

The Altar II uses a 75% layout that retains arrow keys and function rows while minimizing the overall footprint. It connects via two Bluetooth 5.0 LE channels or a USB-C cable for wired use. The device runs on a battery that the manufacturer rates for up to 30 days of typical use.

Under the keycaps, the keyboard employs dual steel arm scissor mechanical switches. These switches provide 1.8mm of tactile key travel and require 40gf of actuation force. The body is CNC-machined from a single block of aluminum, and the keycaps are made from REGEN polymer containing 50% recycled content.
A magnetic M-Dial sits on the device to provide media controls with haptic feedback. The keyboard features red-only backlighting and includes silicone damping to reduce sound. It supports macOS through the Sanctuary app and is compatible with Windows 10 and later versions.
The Altar II launches on Kickstarter on November 10, 2026. Early reservations start at $249, while standard campaign backers pay $299. Early orders after the campaign opens are priced at $279, and retail pricing is set at $349. Deliveries are expected in early summer 2027.
