's Half-Life: Alyx was built for virtual reality headsets, but a new community project is changing that constraint. A developer is porting the game to standard PC controls, which matters because it opens the title to players who do not own VR hardware. This shift challenges the original design philosophy that the experience was impossible without a headset.

Developer SoMNst releases demo footage of traditional controls

The project is a no-VR mod developed by a creator known as SoMNst. The mod replaces the VR-specific interaction model with traditional mouse and keyboard inputs. This allows players to navigate the game world using conventional PC gaming standards rather than motion controllers.

SoMNst recently shared an eleven-minute gameplay video to demonstrate the new mechanics. The footage shows physics interactions that resemble titles like Penumbra, Amnesia, and SOMA. These mechanics allow for a more grounded, non-VR approach to solving puzzles and handling objects in the game.

The mod aims to be the definitive non-VR experience for the game. Valve previously stated that Half-Life: Alyx could not be properly experienced without VR hardware. This community effort directly contradicts that stance by providing a fully functional alternative control scheme.

The full version of the mod is currently in development and has no release date. A demo version is being finalized for public testing. Players interested in this alternative control scheme will need to wait for the developer to complete the project.
