Classic role-playing games are getting a modern visual overhaul without changing how they play. A new software mod transforms the original Pokémon Red and Blue into a 3D voxel experience that runs natively on Windows and Android. Players who want to revisit the Kanto region on modern hardware can now do so with updated graphics and smoother performance. This update matters because it brings a decades-old title into the current generation of devices without requiring original console hardware.

Free open-source update brings native 60 FPS and modern graphics to classic RPG

The project relies on two main components working together. The base engine is Gen1Recomp, a custom tool designed to recompile classic Pokémon games for modern systems. The visual layer is the DramaticShape VoxelMod, which replaces the original 2D sprites with blocky 3D models. This combination allows the game to run on operating systems that never officially supported the original Game Boy release.

The technical improvements focus on resolution and frame rate stability. The mod supports widescreen monitors, giving players a wider field of view than the original handheld display. It also runs at a native 60 frames per second, which makes movement and battle animations significantly smoother. These updates resolve the original game's limited frame rate and square screen proportions.

Under the hood, the gameplay mechanics remain exactly the same as the 1996 releases. The mod only alters the visual presentation, so the battle system, story, and Pokémon stats are unchanged. This method preserves the familiar gameplay for veteran players while presenting a fresh visual style. The codebase is open-source and available for anyone to inspect or modify.

Both the Gen1Recomp engine and the DramaticShape VoxelMod are available for free on GitHub. Users can download the files directly from the repository without any purchase or subscription. This open distribution model enables the community to further enhance the mod and adapt it for additional platforms.
