Sony is ending production of physical PlayStation game discs by January 2028, a move that removes the ability for players to resell, lend, or trade their games. This shift forces the entire PlayStation ecosystem toward a fully digital model, fundamentally changing how players manage their libraries and recover costs. Buyers who rely on the secondary market to fund new purchases will lose that financial buffer entirely. We looked at Sony PS5 Drops Physical Discs in our earlier Sony coverage.

Sony PlayStation shifts to digital-only licenses by 2028, ending physical resale
The announcement comes from Sony, which stated on July 1 that it will stop manufacturing physical media for its consoles. This decision impacts the core hardware strategy for the PlayStation brand, which has relied on disc drives for generations. The company sold 70 million discs in fiscal 2025, accounting for roughly 22% of its total game sales. This volume shows that physical media remains a significant revenue driver for the company despite the digital transition.
Physical discs have historically allowed gamers to sell used copies or trade them in for cash toward new titles. The global second-hand game platform market sits at an estimated $7.2 billion in 2025, according to Dataintelo. That pre-owned segment is expected to shrink significantly as Sony removes the physical medium required for these transactions. Digital licenses are tied to accounts and cannot be resold, creating a permanent lock-in for software purchases.
Existing PS4 and PS5 discs are not affected by the cutoff, allowing older libraries to continue circulating for the foreseeable future. The company faces a $500 million lawsuit in the Netherlands and a petition with over 120,000 signatures regarding the decision. Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter called brick-and-mortar game stores doomed, noting that trade-ins gave gamers actual cash toward buying something new. GameStop's CEO said the decision is irrelevant to the company's operations since it moved away from relying on used software sales a while back.
Sony is committing to a future where PlayStation games are exclusively digital licenses tied to user accounts. The company will cease disc production in January 2028, ending an era of physical resale and lending for new releases. Existing physical libraries remain valid, but new purchases will follow the digital-only model.
