The global launch of Final Fantasy XIV Mobile has been officially cancelled, ending hopes for a worldwide release of the title. Tencent and Square Enix have terminated their licensing agreement for the Chinese edition of the game. This decision means players outside of China will never have access to the mobile version, while existing Chinese users face an imminent shutdown. The cancellation represents a notable withdrawal for the franchise from the mobile gaming sector.

Tencent and Square Enix terminate licensing deal, ending Chinese operations

Tencent's LightSpeed Studios developed the Chinese version of Final Fantasy XIV Mobile, which originally launched in June 2025. The game was intended to bring the popular MMORPG to mobile devices in mainland China. Square Enix, the original creator of the Final Fantasy franchise, partnered with Tencent to localize and operate the service. The partnership has now dissolved, leaving the mobile project without a publisher for its planned global expansion.

The shutdown follows a strict timeline for Chinese players. In-game top-ups and new user registrations will cease at 18:00 UTC+8 on July 17, 2026. The game servers will officially stop operation at 11:00 UTC+8 on September 30, 2026. Forums and dedicated customer support will remain available until 11:00 UTC+8 on October 15, 2026, before closing completely. Players are advised to withdraw remaining funds and plan their final sessions before the service ends.

Tencent and Square Enix cited adjustments in business operations and changes in the market environment as the reasons for the termination. They stated that they reached this decision through amicable negotiation. The decision to cancel the global release indicates that the mobile version likely did not align with the publishers' commercial or strategic objectives. Consequently, the Final Fantasy XIV franchise will continue to focus on its PC and PlayStation editions.

This event follows previous analysis of mobile MMORPGs and major franchise adaptations. The shutdown of the Chinese edition effectively kills any chance of a global rollout. Players who invested time in the Chinese version will lose access to their accounts and progress by the end of September 2026. The project is now fully concluded with no further updates or extensions planned.
