HANDHELD GAMING

GabeConway released OpenCrossing, a decompilation of the GameCube title Animal Crossing, allowing players to run the game on specific Anbernic handhelds. This project expands the library of playable GameCube titles for clamshell devices that previously relied on other emulation methods. Users interested in portable Animal Crossing can now access the game through this new software layer.

The project targets the Anbernic RG 34XXSP and RG 28XX handhelds as its primary test hardware. It builds upon previous decompilation efforts by ACreTeam and ports the software to these specific devices. The decompilation requires the handheld to run either the muOS or Knulli operating system to function correctly.

  • Target Hardware: Anbernic RG 34XXSP, Anbernic RG 28XX
  • Target Operating Systems: muOS, Knulli
  • Performance: ~56 FPS (drops to 40)
  • Source Material: USA Animal Crossing ISO

Performance testing on the target hardware shows an average frame rate of approximately 56 FPS. The frame rate can drop to as low as 40 FPS during more intensive scenes. Users must provide their own legally obtained USA ISO of Animal Crossing to play the game, as the software does not include the game data.

While other systems in the Anbernic H700 line may work, the author notes that compatibility has not been tested yet. This means users with different models should proceed with caution or expect potential instability. The project currently focuses on the confirmed compatibility with the 34XXSP and 28XX models.
