Sony is updating its PlayStation Network Terms of Service to include a clause that allows the company to delete accounts that have been inactive for three years. This policy shift matters to anyone who has left a console sitting in a drawer, as it introduces a potential risk to digital game libraries and saved progress. Users who have not logged into their accounts for 36 months may face account closure, which could result in the permanent loss of purchased content.

EU users must log in within six months of warning to keep libraries

The specific rule, identified as Rule 21.2 in the Sony Interactive Entertainment Terms of Service, states that the company may take steps to close accounts with no recent activity. The enforcement process includes a notification period where users receive an email warning them of the impending deletion. This email grants the account holder a six-month window to log in and reactivate the account before any data is removed.

The application of this rule varies significantly by region due to legal constraints. In the European Union, the policy is currently active and enforceable under local regulations. However, the same rule is restricted in the United States because local laws prohibit or limit such account termination practices. This creates a split experience for PlayStation users depending on their geographic location.

The discovery of this inactivity clause coincides with Sony's broader announcement that it will end the production of physical game discs by 2028. This timing has drawn attention from consumers who are concerned about the long-term preservation of their gaming assets as the industry moves further toward digital-only distribution. Despite the clear wording of the policy, there are no documented cases of Sony actually enforcing these deletions in the past.

We touched on Sony PS5 Digital Edition Japan in our earlier Sony coverage, which highlighted the company's ongoing shift toward digital hardware. The current policy update reinforces the importance of regular account activity for users relying on digital storefronts. Sony has not confirmed any immediate mass deletions, but the rule remains in effect for EU users who have not engaged with their accounts recently.
