Nintendo Switch 2 will likely remain the only major console with physical media as Sony and Microsoft move to digital- only hardware in 2028.

Sony and Microsoft are preparing to eliminate physical game discs from their next-generation consoles, a shift that risks leaving as the only major manufacturer still supporting physical media. This divergence matters because it forces a choice for buyers who want to trade, sell, or collect games, as the rest of the industry moves toward digital-only libraries. Nintendo appears committed to its cartridge-based model for the Switch 2, regardless of what competitors decide to do with their hardware strategies.

Analyst predicts Nintendo ignores competitor shifts to maintain cartridge support

The industry pivot began with Sony, which announced it will stop producing game discs for its next console starting in January 2028. Microsoft is pursuing a similar digital path by developing a feature that will digitize existing game libraries for its upcoming Project Helix console. Industry analysts expect both the PlayStation 6 and Project Helix to launch as strictly digital devices, marking a significant departure from the hybrid models that have defined the current generation.

Nintendo plans to continue releasing physical cartridges for the Switch 2 throughout its entire lifecycle. This strategy stands in stark contrast to the disc-based systems used by Sony and the digital-first approach of Microsoft. While the rest of the market abandons physical formats, Nintendo maintains its reliance on tangible game media, a stance that aligns with its historical approach to hardware and software distribution.

The decline in physical game retail spend is expected to accelerate as retailers adapt to this digital transition. To compensate for shrinking physical sales, publishers and retailers are increasing the inclusion of digital codes, merchandise, and special edition swag in product boxes. This shift in retail strategy reflects a broader industry move away from traditional physical game sales toward bundled digital and physical goods.

Analyst Mat Piscatella of Circana notes that Nintendo is unlikely to change its plans based on the moves made by Sony or Microsoft. He suggests that Nintendo will continue to do what it wants, maintaining its physical media presence even as competitors drop discs. This independence allows Nintendo to serve a niche market of physical media enthusiasts who might otherwise be excluded from the next generation of consoles.
