The developer behind 1666 Amsterdam has admitted to using generative AI assets in the game's free prologue. This admission sparked immediate backlash from players who noticed AI-generated elements during a recent showcase event.

Panache Digital Games admits generative AI use in free prologue and promises no AI in full game release

Panache Digital Games released the prologue on and Epic Games Store after showing it at Summer Game Fest. The studio plans to release the full version of 1666 Amsterdam later, but they now promise that future content will not contain any AI-generated assets.

The development team identified specific in-game portraits and external marketing materials as AI-generated. They labeled this inclusion an oversight and issued a public apology for the mistake.

Players have criticized the studio for using AI during the prologue phase and then dismissing it as an error. Some fans suspect the developer intentionally used generative tools before claiming the inclusion was accidental.

The controversy follows a recent showcase where creative director Patrice Desilets presented the game to the public. Fans are now questioning whether the full release will honor the promise to exclude AI assets entirely.
